Deciding My Topic (Dolphin Tank)

My Topic: To research how to grow organic plants, how to raise chicks and how to build a safe chicken coop.  And to build a website that shows my progress of the plants, the chicks and the chicken coop step by step and inspires people of all ages.

When I had to choose a topic for my project I had a lot of different ideas because I have a lot of interests, but I decided to do something that helps my family and me to be more healthy and sustainable and it also should inspire other people to do the same. I think nowadays it is even more important to be in nature since we always sit in front of the computer screen and we are losing the connection to nature. I am lucky to have a garden and enough space to built a chicken coop and for that reason and my strong interest in nature, food and animals and being a vegetarian, made me chose this topic. Connecting my topic to the global context: " Scientific and Technical Innovation" seemed to fit my intent of my topic, because by doing this project I will develop a stronger connection to the natural world and I will adapt my environment to my needs.

Clarifying my PP using SMART     ATL : Thinking
Plan to achieve a goal, including identifying targets and outlining steps :

Time

My goal is to plan and built a safe chicken coop, to grow 4 different organic vegetables and to raise 4 baby chicks over the summer. I will also make a dish from my 4 vegetables.

I will get 4 chicken, 2 vegetable patches and a 4 square meter chicken coop.

I will look for a tutorial on youtube that explains how to built a safe chicken coop and I will ask my grandma how to grow specific vegetables. To have an organised plan for raising chickens I will research about it in the internet and I will look for a good recipe.

It is realistic because I have enough space in my garden and enough time to raise my chickens in the summer break.

I have enough time in the summer break.

“Since 1792, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has spoken to all walks of life: tide tables for those who live near the ocean; sunrise and planting charts for those who live on the farm; recipes for those who live in the kitchen; and forecasts for those who don’t like the question of weather left up in the air.” The authors of this blog update their posts when it is necessary.

Relevance :

This website gave me information about how to raise baby chicks. “As well as chick starter and clean water, they need a draft-free brooder pen with a red brooder lamp on at all times. This keeps the temperature at 92°F at 2 inches above the floor.”, it said. “When the chicks have feathered out, reduce the temperature by 5 degrees per week until they are 6 weeks old, then switch their feed from chick starter to grower mash.” I raised my baby chicks exactly how it said.

Authority :

The author, Elizabeth Creith, has fifteen years of experience keeping chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys on her farm in Northern Ontario.

Accuracy :

Since the author of that post has 15 years of experience of raising chicks, I think that I can use her information to raise my own baby chicks.

Purpose :

This blog post provides readers with information about the first steps of raising chickens.

Meeting 1 with Mr. Hart          Date: June 1, 2017, Friday

In the first meeting with Mr. Hart I gave him an overview of my project and the global context I chose. After I told him about my goals I showed him the WIX website I started as a process journal for my project where I also upload videos and pictures. He helped me create the criteria for my goals. (very helpful -> good ideas) We also set a date for him to look at the chicken coop I’ve started and the vegetable patches to give me more specific advice.
